🎭 The August festivals are over but you'll find plenty more festivals in Edinburgh between now and Hogmanay (I nearly typed the 'C' word there). Tickets for this year's Scottish International Storytelling Festival (21 - 31 October) will be available from Tuesday 15 September. The festival's family programme is live now.
- Already announced: a key event in the programme titled 'National Theatre of Scotland at 20: Culture, Democracy, and the Stateless Nation'. Here's the description: 'As the National Theatre of Scotland and the Scottish Storytelling Centre both mark their twentieth anniversaries, this special event brings together artists, academics, cultural leaders, public figures and audiences to explore the relationship between theatre, storytelling, literature and democratic life in Scotland. The event opens with a panel discussion then an in-conversation event with Nicola Sturgeon and Joyce McMillan.' - Tickets are here.
⛵️ Another festival: The first events on the programme for 12 - 15 November's annual Push the Boat Out international poetry festival at the Pleasance have been announced. Workshops include: 'Maintaining an online presence as a writer: how, what and why?' with Naomi Head and 'Overcoming imposter syndrome' with Emma Collins. - More details here.
- The first wave of acts announced includes Jackie Kay, Henry Normal, Joelle Taylor, Luke Wright and Anthony Joseph, alongside a newly commissioned closing work.
- The full festival programme is due to be announced on 1 October. A special opening event is planned on The Fingal ship at the Shore on 31 October, reports Rose Moncur in The Herald.
🎭 While Fringe bosses have rejected calls to move 2027's festival to earlier dates in the calendar, there are still 'seven ways to improve Edinburgh's festivals for their 80th birthday,' writes Brian Ferguson in The Herald.

- The debate over why the final week of the Fringe felt quieter for some performers continues. "It’s great to have a record sales day, but let’s not use that as evidence that the Fringe is thriving. One enormous Saturday can coexist with a very different picture across the rest of the festival especially when we're seeing fewer tickets per performance, and week 3 worryingly empty," says theatre producer Sam Bain on Instagram, with a lively debate ongoing in the comments section.
- "Edinburgh could craft its own civic promise, co-written with residents, artists and festival workers, setting out what the city asks of its guests – not just what it sells them," writes Mike Small in Bella Caledonia.

🎸 Stereolab will headline this year's Edinburgh Psych Fest alongside Ty Segall, Angine De Poitine, Shame and Billy Nomates. The festival takes over venues including the Usher Hall, Queen's Hall, La Belle, Summerhall and Sneaky Pete's. It is sold out but you can join the waiting list for return tickets here.

🎭 What's on Edinburgh's stages this week?

Well, that was the Fringe that was... Hope you all had a wonderful time of it. At Æ Towers we were busy reviewing all the shows made by Edinburgh-based companies. We didn't quite make all 180 or so of them, but we do have a righteous 152 shows covered. You can wade through them all here, if you are interested.
So what of Edinburgh's stages this week? Not a theatrical sausage: unsurprisingly, everyone's gone for a little lie-down. All except our heroic Hugh, who was at Pitlochry for their "★★★★★ Devastating" A History of Paper. If you want to see it, best leave now as there are a few briefs tonight, but the rest of the run is returns only.
There are a couple of non-theatre shows. The Festival Theatre has the Ocean Film Festival (Sat: tickets) and Serena Terry: Therapy (Sun: tickets), while the Playhouse has The Prat Pack’s Back (Wed: tickets) and An Evening with Sir David Jason (Sat: tickets).
Next week it's a return to normal, with The Silence of the Lambs at the Festival Theatre (Tue 8-Sat 12: tickets) and the Cole Porter musical High Society at the Playhouse (Tue 8-Sat 12: tickets) both opening before next week's Culture Minute drops.
Local Heroes to look out for over the rest of the month include the LYAMC at the Church Hill Theatre with Bugsy Malone (Th 10 - Sat 12: tickets) and Penpal Productions with six new script-in-hand works on the Seven Deadly Sins at Leith Depot (Mon 21: tickets).
Then Showcase 2026 the MacMillan Cancer Support benefit is Dream As One at the Church Hill (Tue 22 - Sat 26: tickets) while the canny students at Bedlam have secured the rights for a rare non-official tour production of Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show (Wed 23-Sat 26: tickets), including a pair of midnight shows.
