👋 Hello festival fans. The final big weekend is here. Town is still exceptionally busy but some shows are reporting a dramatic drop in ticket sales in this final festival week. It's sparked discussion as to whether the festivals began too late and should be more aligned with school holidays. Feel free to share your views in the comments section. 🎤 Comedian Susie McCabe is leading calls for next year's Fringe dates to be shifted to begin at the start of August rather than the second week. "The last week of the Fringe has felt incredibly long. Starting at the tail end of the first week in August is absolutely ludicrous, no consideration of when Scottish schools go back, which is within days of the festival starting. It’s the last Friday of the Fringe and people are sitting with half full rooms." - More in Jane Bradley's report in The Scotsman.

🪄 Cameron Gibson of the Edinburgh-based Insane Magic global touring trio says their fourth year at the Fringe has seen them cancel a 'Headline Comedy' show for the first time ever. He told the Edinburgh Minute: "Ticket sales across this last week of the festival are DIABOLICALLY LOW for almost all artists. It’s a real shame and will be the difference between a lot of people deciding whether or not to return to Edinburgh. Ours are less than 1/3rd of what they were this time last year across our company’s 6 shows! Anything you can do in the minute to really encourage locals to leave the house and go see as many shows as they can in the last week would make a HUGE difference. We had so many conversations with other producers over the last few days and it’s like this across the board. We’ve never seen anything like it. ⮑ Theatre programmer Sam Bain added: "Sales fell off a cliff this week. Venue leaders across the festival are saying the same thing: strong first half, flat second half. 🎵 Edinburgh International Festival: Verdi’s A Masked Ball at the Festival Theatre gets five stars from Carol Main in The Scotsman, describing the show as 'heart-stoppingly compelling'. - Final tickets for 7pm Saturday and 2pm Sunday are available at the time of writing here.

🎭 Get priority booking for Tilda Swinton in Man to Man at the Traverse - 'Audiences who want to see Tilda Swinton in Man to Man at the Traverse can qualify for Priority Booking until midnight on 30 August. 🎨 Thankfully there's much more to Edinburgh's creative scenes than the August festivals. If you're keen to get a bit more involved, there's an event planned next weekend of interest: the Edinburgh Art Map launch on Sunday 6 September (4pm to 8pm) will include an open discussion reflecting on artist-run activity in Edinburgh, featuring Khadea Santi, Peter Amoore, Mina Heydari-Waite and Jenny Hogarth. Organisers say:
"With little visible history of grassroots spaces currently accessible in Edinburgh, we wished to focus on how artists have self-organised in the past. Rather than diminish the difficulties of running a space, especially as risk and precarity is unevenly balanced in the sector, we wanted to bring attention to the ways people have organised in various ways together before, and how we might adapt, continue and support all kinds of artist-run activity in Edinburgh in the future."
