Leith 'Town of Culture' bid, another senior resignation from uni, Princes Street police chase, Tom Kelly's monthly wildlife round-up + magnificent magnolias & blossom blooming
🌤️ Good morning Edinburgh. Keep your wits about you this morning. There will be some attempts at April Fool’s jokes (not here), as if the news world wasn’t already full enough of fake news and time-wasting clickbait. There's a Better News section today instead. Here’s Wednesday's Edinburgh Minute.
⚓️ A group of locals in Leith are bidding for the area to be named as the UK’s first Town of Culture. - Exclusive by Brian Ferguson in The Herald.
🎓 Another top boss is quitting the University of Edinburgh, amid this week's ongoing staff strikes over potential plans for compulsory redundancies. Professor Iain Gordon, Head of the College of Science and Engineering, emailed staff yesterday to announce he was resigning to take up a post as Senior Vice-Principal at the University of Glasgow (which confirmed the appointment on LinkedIn). Gordon is the third unexpected professorial departure from the influential Senior Leadership Team in the last seven months. Professor Christina Boswell (Vice Principal Research & Enterprise) stepped down last autumn, as did Professor Colm Harmon (Vice Principal (Students)), who featured in viral videos of repeated student protests last year. All three were part of the SLT under Principal Peter Mathieson, which was subject to a vote of 'no confidence' from the University Senate last May (Minute edition 644).
