👋 Good morning Edinburgh. It's a busy one. Thanks to everyone who sends things in, keeping me busy! Here’s Thursday's **Edinburgh Minute**.

🌦️ **Today's weather forecast**: An overcast but dry start. There's a chance of rain from around 1pm today until 3pm tomorrow. Light rain could linger on Saturday too. Sunday is currently looking sunny. - [The full Met Office forecast for Edinburgh is here](https://weather.metoffice.gov.uk/forecast/gcvwr3zrw?ref=edinburghminute.com#?date=2026-11-05).

🌅 **Sunrise**: 7.28am. **Sunset**: 4.24pm.

🎇 '**Edinburgh firework control zones**: *Dates, locations and everything you need to know as Bonfire Night rules introduced.*' - [Heather Carrick, Evening News](https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/edinburgh-firework-control-zones-dates-locations-and-everything-you-need-to-know-as-bonfire-night-rules-introduced-9316084?ref=edinburghminute.com).
⮑ '*10 Bonfire Night events to enjoy in and around the Capital*' - [David Hepburn, The Scotsman](https://www.scotsman.com/whats-on/edinburgh-public-fireworks-displays-2026-here-are-10-bonfire-night-events-to-enjoy-in-and-around-the-capital-9327803?ref=edinburghminute.com).

🪧 Protestors from the '*Scotland Stop Arming Israel*' group blocked the entrance to the ***Leonardo*** aerospace facility at Crewe Toll yesterday morning. Police said they were 'engaging with the group', while Leonardo said 'we respect the right to peaceful protest'. - [Chloe Goodall, Edinburgh Live](https://www.edinburghlive.co.uk/news/edinburgh-news/edinburgh-group-block-factory-entrance-34859499?ref=edinburghminute.com).

🎨 Controversial plans to partially demolish the **Summerhall** arts centre for student housing and hotel use were discussed by councillors yesterday. A **second public consultation event** is pencilled in for next Wednesday (11 Nov) with the date to be confirmed ([on this link](https://www.summerhallconsultation.co.uk/next-steps.php?ref=edinburghminute.com)). No decisions were made at yesterday's council meeting as the plans are still at such an early stage. Craigentinny/Duddingston Green councillor Alex Staniforth raised concerns about the loss of space for artists and small businesses, saying: "*Those key issues are: the loss of cultural, community and business floor space. The demolition and alteration of listed buildings on the site. The classification of the proposed accommodation, how any retained cultural floorspace will be secured and phased, and the Southside 2040 Local Place plan.*" Leith Walk SNP councillor Amy McNeese-Mechan said she wanted: "*Clarity on the 'retained' spaces, does that mean it will be emptied and people will have to go find new spaces during the construction process?"* No answers were given but committee chair Hal Osler said the questions had been noted. For those interested, [the webcast recording is here](https://democracy.edinburgh.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=148&MId=8085&ref=edinburghminute.com) and the Summerhall section started just after 33 minutes.

⮑ Meanwhile city architect **Malcolm Fraser** says a Community Asset transfer could be possible if site owner AMA doesn't get planning permission. He said: "*Proposals that involve substantial demolition, and proposed uses that damage Summerhall’s nature as a creative powerhouse, should and will be turned down at Planning \[...\] leaving the possibility of a collective of those who use and value Summerhall organising to utilise the Scottish “Right to Buy” legislation to take control of the site*." - [Full quotes within this report by Phyllis Stephen in The Edinburgh Reporter](https://theedinburghreporter.co.uk/2026/11/the-answer-to-the-emergency-facing-edinburgh-artists-could-be-in-their-own-hands/?ref=edinburghminute.com).

🏗️ The demolition of Calderglen Early Learning Centre in **Sighthill** was signed off by councillors yesterday after a ceiling collapse in January. - [Nicholas Malizia](https://midlothianview.com/news/edinburgh-councillors-vote-to-demolish-early-years-centre?ref=edinburghminute.com), [Local Democracy Reporter, Midlothian View](https://midlothianview.com/news/edinburgh-councillors-vote-to-demolish-early-years-centre?ref=edinburghminute.com).

🏨 Plans to demolish a group of derelict buildings on **Constitution Street** and replace them with holiday lets have been approved by councillors. - [Nicholas Malizia, Local Democracy Reporter, Edinburgh Live](https://www.edinburghlive.co.uk/news/edinburgh-news/edinburgh-holiday-flats-given-go-34861363?ref=edinburghminute.com).

🏨 Plans for a new hotel on **Picardy Place** appear to be moving forward. - [The Spurtle has more details](https://www.broughtonspurtle.org.uk/news/potential-hotel-under-offer?ref=edinburghminute.com).

🛟 The organiser of the New Year's Day **Loony Dook** in South Queensferry has cancelled the next event, saying it is '*becoming a safety issue due to its popularity*'. - [Jack Davies, Evening News](https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/loony-dook-cancelled-safety-concerns-9330060?ref=edinburghminute.com).

🥐 After a decade in Stockbridge, **The Pastry Section** owner Lesley Stewart says the bakery will close on 14 February 2027\. She said: "*In the current climate the thought of signing another long lease was not something I felt comfortable with & leaving our space on Raeburn place on our terms when we are still in a good position felt like the most natural way to hand this amazing space over to someone new*." The business will continue its Great Junction Street and Drumsheugh Gardens operations. - [She shared more details in this Instagram post](https://www.instagram.com/p/DfVFas2jgu8/?img%5Findex=1&ref=edinburghminute.com).
