Edinburgh University announces marking and assessment boycott
An email has been sent out to students announcing a marking boycott amid ongoing disputes over budget cuts
  • Uni Principal Peter Mathieson responded: "We are profoundly disappointed, disheartened and frustrated that UCU Edinburgh members have again voted in favour of purposefully targeting our students with a marking and assessment boycott."
    • Meanwhile, UCU members at Queen Margaret University are being balloted for strike action in a dispute over jobs, working conditions and changes to working practices. - The union published this statement.
    • A QMU spokesperson told the East Lothian Courier it was 'committed to ensuring that all consultation with trade unions and staff is genuine and meaningful and can reassure current and prospective students that the proposed changes would not affect the student experience.'

🤖 A row has broken out after the volunteer-run Leith Festival used AI as part of its designs to promote this year's events. Organisers published a statement yesterday defending its decision. The festival has faced months of pressure from local artists who are annoyed that the controversial technology was used on multiple designs. It started in January when the festival was questioned in its social media comments sections for publishing a graphic of an accordion player with three hands (Instagram / Facebook).

  • The Minute contacted Leith Festival, and designer 'Sweet', earlier this year but had no response.
  • Yesterday the festival said: "We strongly believe that arts/design/creatives can never be replaced, but also feel that with modern technology, there can be room for a little creative technological innovation too - i.e. the basis for our fun wee characters."
  • The statement sparked another flurry of angry responses in the comments section here, with critics calling on the festival to use local artists instead of AI technology which, in some cases, derives its output from stolen artwork.
  • The festival says it welcomes volunteers.

Dear Friends and Future Practitioners, How do you know that you are doing the best thing for your life right now? Probably, you don’t. It’s a question we ask rarely, yet it sits at the heart of our well-being. How do we even know what the best thing to do is? The moment we pause to ask this, we realise there are countless options available to us. The list of possibilities is endless. Each option is an opportunity. Yet, we often “wing it,” letting circumstances dictate our actions rather than choosing them with intention. The core challenge is deciding what a “best life” actually means and ensuring our choices align with it. This is not a one-time decision but a lived experience. Time and circumstances change constantly, and so do our opportunities and objectives. This is the foundation of the Practice of Harmonic Alignment. It is a way of living that helps us. The classes will invite to step onto your own unique journey of Harmonic Alignment, through learnings, meditations and connection. The class is free or by cash donation to the teacher on the day. Please notice the class is organized by the teacher independently who wishes to kindly offers his teaching for free or donation to cover the hire of the studio. Please support him if you can.
