💰 Despite multiple tax-dodging cases highlighted by local journalists, including in this newsletter, it's been revealed this morning that no one in Edinburgh has faced criminal charges for tax avoidance over the last three years. - Exclusive by Josh Pizzuto-Pomaco in The Herald.

No criminal charges against capital’s alleged business rates dodgers since 2024
Without clear evidence of deceptive and deliberate non-compliance, authorities are prevented from bringing criminal charges against tax dodgers.

🚎 Lothian Buses announced new bus services will be launched next month when a raft of new drivers begin their jobs. The introduction of a new service number 28 between Gilmerton and Bellevue will link Gilmerton Station Road, Lasswade Road, Mayfield Road, Surgeons’ Hall, North Bridge and Leith Street every 30 minutes. Buses on the number 7 route are being increased to every 15 minutes. The Royal Infirmary will get new early morning and evening connections, with the 37A to/from Penicuik and the new 39A to/from Rosewell. There are lots of minor timetable changes on many other services, all due to start from Sunday 13 September, with full details and maps here.

  • East Coast Buses changes include a reduction in the number of X5 route journeys, due to 'a reduction in customer demand on the North Berwick bus corridor'.
Service change to take effect from Sunday 13 September - Lothian Buses
Following our service change in February, our teams have been reviewing travel patterns throughout the spring and summer as part of a wider programme to improve connectivity and reliability across our network. With additional driver resources scheduled to be recruited by this date, we intend to introduce a service change from Sunday 13 September on…Continue reading →

🚧 The council could consider a Compulsory Purchase Order on the fire-damaged former Debenhams building on Princes Street. Local Scottish Green Party councillors have tabled the proposal for next week's full council meeting. They are also calling for a total ban on all private cars from the blocks bounded by Princes Street, Frederick Street, Queen Street and Charlotte Square, except where access is required, during the road closure. - Full details in the motion tabled by Portobello/Craigmillar councillor Alys Mumford here. She told the Minute:

"Everyone has been working hard to try and resolve the issues caused by the Princes Street fire, but we think there is still more that could be done to help get the city moving. Some of this has to involve a conversation about using the legal powers available to the Council to purchase the building, if that is the best option to get the repair and restoration on track - we simply can't have a situation where what is best for residents and visitors is held up by reluctance to find solutions from the building's owners. Like everyone else, we're hopeful that the situation will be resolved without any further delay, but if that proves not to be the case, Greens want to see the Council take steps to prioritise public transport over private profit."

⮑ Council leader (and Portobello/Craigmillar Labour councillor) Jane Meagher will tell next Thursday's meeting that she wants 'a structured lessons learned review' to be compiled by officers, looking at 'the resilience of the tram network, including consideration of operational dependencies, potential single points of failure, depot resilience, engineering and operational contingency arrangements, and options for improving network redundancy as the tram system develops.'

🗳️ Also on next Thursday's council meeting agenda:

🚏 On the topic of bus stops, City Centre Green councillor Claire Miller is trying to find out more about the process for removing bus stops. - See the questions here. She told the Minute:

"It's the busiest time of year just now and public transport is already disrupted by the Princes Street fire, so we urgently need to make it easier to get around by bus. I’m desperate to get more information about bus stops for North and South Bridge so that I can get back to all the constituents who are waiting for news. The Council must make it easier for people to find out information and to provide feedback on essential services such as city centre bus stops."

⮑ When asked by the Minute last month why bus stops were removed as part of the £86m restoration of North Bridge, whether there was any public input and why no equality impact assessments on the decision exist, city transport leader (and Pentland Hills Labour councillor) Stephen Jenkinson said: "We’ve taken this decision, with the support of Lothian Buses, to improve the reliability of our services and increase footway space on North Bridge. We’ve seen over the length of the project, and through feedback from Lothian, that services from South Bridge have performed well. We’re now taking work forward to widen the footway here and make the area more accessible for everyone.”

The uni previously defended its cost reduction efforts, saying costs are rising and 'further recurrent savings are still needed to achieve financial sustainability'.

  • Staff and students are planning an 'emergency rally' on Friday to protest against the £140m cuts. They fear '2000+ jobs are at risk'. - More details from the UCU here.
