- Author: Michael MacLeod

👋 Good morning Edinburgh. It's a busy one! I'll be covering the trams meeting this morning and will have all the news and reaction for you in tomorrow morning's edition. Here’s Thursday's **Edinburgh Minute**.

[Subscribe for free or upgrade here](https://www.edinburghminute.com/#/portal/signup/)

🌦️ **Today's weather forecast**: After yesterday's beautiful light, the rain returns today. Just light showers. A high of 17C around 3pm today. Tomorrow should be sunnier again. - [The full Met Office forecast for Edinburgh is here](https://weather.metoffice.gov.uk/forecast/gcvwr3zrw?ref=edinburghminute.com#?date=2026-09-10).

🚦 A multi-million pound '*ambitious but pragmatic*' **revamp of Princes Street** got the green light from councillors at yesterday's planning meeting. An alternative 'radical rethink' proposal was dismissed when only the Lib Dems voted for it. The Greens voted for neither, saying the new road layout risked '*throwing cyclists under the bus*'. - [With all the details, Josh Pizzuto-Pomaco in The Herald](https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/26536841.radical-rethink-princes-street-rejected-edinburgh-councillors/?ref=edinburghminute.com).

⮑ The council said the plans '*incorporate a range of enhancements to Princes Street, the Gardens and surrounding area*', including:

- Widening the Princes Street southern **pavement** by 1.5m,
- Narrowing the Princes Street south side carriageway 'to make more space for walking and wheeling', while maintaining two lanes in each direction for buses and trams,
- New ramps '*or potentially lifts*' installed in **Princes Street Gardens**,
- '*Upgrade and refurbishment work*' for the **Ross Bandstand** and amphitheatre,
- The **shelters** in the gardens are to be '*repurposed for use as small cafes and potential community use*',
- 'New or improved' public **toilets** and new lighting in the gardens,
- A 'new cycle hub' at **Waverley Station** and 'improved cycle parking' on Princes Street,

⮑ "*Crucially, this differs from previous plans in that it is affordable and deliverable, and we have the resources to take forward these improvements immediately*." - Council planning leader Joan Griffiths.

⮑ **Next steps**: The project's designs and costs will be worked on and presented again to councillors '***in early 2027***', [according to this council press release](https://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/news/article/14485/step-forward-for-princes-street-and-waverley-valley-as-design-approach-is-agreed?ref=edinburghminute.com).

🚉 Councillors will vote today on **future Edinburgh tram routes**. While extending the line south to the Royal Infirmary is widely backed, there is uncertainty around the proposed northern leg to Granton, as political parties are split over using the Roseburn Path, which is still on the table for the vote.

- The Transport and Environment Committee meeting starts at 10am at the City Chambers. You can find the meeting agenda and webcast link [on the council website](https://democracy.edinburgh.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?CId=136&MId=8122&ref=edinburghminute.com). There is a helpful preview [in this week's edi.bike newsletter](https://buttondown.com/edi.bike/archive/issue-161-7th-sep-26/?ref=edinburghminute.com) and a breakdown all of five local **political parties' positions** from [Josh Pizzuto-Pomaco in The Herald](https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/26536269.will-happen-roseburn-path-tram-vote-thursday/?ref=edinburghminute.com).
- The extension could cost **up to £2.9 billion** and the council doesn't know for sure yet where that funding would come from. "*That is likely to be from multiple sources – whether it is The Scottish Government, The UK Government or a combination*," said Transport Convener Stephen Jenkinson. - [Phyllis Stephen, The Edinburgh Reporter](https://theedinburghreporter.co.uk/2026/09/transport-committee-meeting-on-thursday-to-hear-a-range-of-views-pro-and-anti-north-south-tram-project/?ref=edinburghminute.com).

🚔 The family of a woman who was killed in a **four-car crash** near Edinburgh Airport on Monday have paid tribute to her. Relatives of Linda Patterson, 58, [released a statement through Police Scotland](https://www.scotland.police.uk/what-s-happening/news/2026/september/three-people-charged-following-fatal-crash-near-newbridge/?ref=edinburghminute.com). They said: "*Linda was a beautiful soul whose warmth and cheery sense of humour left their mark on everyone she knew. She will be greatly missed.*" Police charged three people but are still appealing to 'anyone with dash-cam footage or private CCTV' to contact them.
