🌤️ Good morning Edinburgh. Thanks for bearing with me while I took a few days off from the newsletter, as mentioned in the past few editions. Happy to be back in your inbox! Today's newsletter is longer than usual as it's got a week's worth of updates for us to all catch-up on and I've also spent hours reading this week's council reports. I'll try to return to brevity tomorrow. Thanks as always to everyone who subscribes and sends items in. Here’s Monday's Edinburgh Minute.

🌦️ This week's weather: There was rain overnight and earlier this morning. The rest of the day is forecast to be dry until the evening. Light showers on and off for the rest of the week. It should dry up and warm up by Friday and into the weekend. A low of 8C tomorrow and a high of 19C on Friday. - See the full Met Office forecast here.

🎓 An extortion scam targeting Edinburgh-based Chinese students via the WeChat app has been exposed by investigative journalists. 🚧 With its £86m refurb almost complete, North Bridge is planned to fully reopen 'by the start of the festival season in August'. - Josh Pizzuto-Pomaco, The Herald.

🤽‍♀️ Some members of Portobello Amateur Swimming Club are concerned about some of the options tabled for a revamp of Portobello Swim Centre. - Ian Swanson, Evening News. More details on the plans are here.

🚎 Lothian Buses has ordered 60 new longer double-decker buses to meet growing passenger demand. - Kevin Quinn, Evening News.

🚲 The city's Voi e-bike hire scheme could be extended to Cramond and Portobello in time for the festivals in August, reports Alastair Dalton in The Scotsman.

🗳️ By-elections will be held in the Southside/Newington and Portobello/Craigmillar wards following the resignations of councillors Simita Kumar and Kate Campbell, who were elected as MSPs. Voters will go to the polls on Thursday 3 September. - More details from the council here.

🗳️ It's a busy week of council meetings. Here's a summary of what our elected local representatives will overseeing at the City Chambers:

  • Monday: Culture and Communities Committee (agenda here)
    • Some of the city's shared private gardens could be opened voluntarily to the public, if a motion by Scottish Greens councillor Dan Heap is approved. - Nick Forbes, The Herald. The motion is online here and there's a good debate about the opening of private parks on the Spurtle website.
    • There will also be a vote on giving £132,000 from tourist tax income 'to deliver an enhanced Festival Carnival and Mardi Gras as part of the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival 2026' after they were cancelled last year. - Full report here.
    • There's also a review of the 2025 Firework Control Zones, with plans for ten restriction zones between 30 October and 8 November this year. - Full report here.
  • Tuesday: Education, Children and Families Committee
    • Councillors are expected to approve plans to restrict pupils' use of mobile phones in primary and secondary schools. A consultation had 13,930 responses. Of the thousands of secondary pupils who responded, 32% were against restrictions while 53% favoured part restrictions. On ongoing trials, the council says: "So far feedback is broadly positive with evidence that young people are talking more to each other." If councillors vote in favour tomorrow, the restrictions are planned to start in August and a budget of £400,000 will be used for lockable cabinets and pouches. - Full report here.
      • ⮑ There could be some debate over the details of the ban, though, such as access during breaks. - Ian Swanson, Evening News.
    • There's an update on whether the Calderglen Nursery building in Sighthill will be demolished or repaired after repeated roof leak problems and a ceiling collapse in February. - Full report here.
  • Wednesday: Development Management Sub-Committee (planning)
    • 27 more applications (including some retrospective) to turn homes in to short-term lets are refused.
    • The meeting is due to include an update on AMA Homes' plans for flats and sports facilities in Cramond. - Full report here.
    • Plans by George Watson's College for two new floodlit artificial sports pitches east of Myreside have been approved. - Full plans here.

🏗️ Last week councillors pledged to spend more than £207m on improving and expanding council housing across the city. It includes £111m for housebuilding in 2026-27, part of a £1.3 billion project to develop 4275 new affordable houses over the next five years. - The council published more details here.

🚔 A 36-year-old man appeared in court on Thursday charged with murder one year after a 50-year-old man was found dead on Princes Street outside the Uniqlo shop. - Keiran Fleming, STV News.

⛪️ St Giles' Cathedral will start charging tourists £12 for entry from September, while all Scottish residents and under-16s can get in for free. - Danyel VanReenen in the Evening News.

🌯 The organisers of Neighbourgood Market in Stockbridge are planning to open a new daily streetfood market at Princes Street Gardens' Ross Bandstand. Neighbourgood Gardens is due to run from 23 July until 31 August. - More details here.

🎭 Underbelly festival boss Charlie Wood says he's worried about 'prohibitive' accommodation costs after being quoted £25,000 to rent an August flat. - Jane Bradley, The Scotsman.

  • Fringe Society chief executive Tony Lankester blamed 'the unintended consequences of short term let legislation', saying that removing red tape to free-up more empty student accommodation could be the key. - Jane Bradley, The Scotsman.
  • ⮑ Meanwhile the directors of Edinburgh's 11 major festivals are considering launching a single universal box office to offset expected public funding cuts and to pool their lucrative customer data. - Severin Carrell, The Guardian.

🥡 A favourite of many festival-goers, Redbox Noodle Bar on West Nicolson Street is closing down on Saturday after nearly two decades in business. - The owners posted this update on Facebook.

🍻 A £280,000 refurb begins today at the Joseph Pearce pub on Elm Row. It's due to reopen in late July under new operator Paul Henderson, described as 'a local resident and Joseph Pearce customer' in this report by Dram.

📚 Over the road, Typewronger Books is moving from Haddington Place to 22 Bruntsfield Place , formerly home of Flamingosaurus Rex, which has moved up the road to number 31. - The shop shared plans of its July move on Instagram.

🇨🇮 Grassmarket pub Biddy Mulligans has set itself up as an unlikely outpost for Ivory Coast football fans after a social media video went viral. - Mike Wade visits the bar and reports in The Observer.
