The Edinburgh Minute ⏰ Monday 13 April 2026
Nicolson Street 'stabbing', Porty yoga studio relocation row, another massive advert planned for Princes Street + Neighbourgood Market returning to Stockbridge
🌤️ Good morning Edinburgh. I’ve read hundreds of weekend news stories one-by-one (without using AI ever) to weed out all the clickbait rubbish and today’s newsletter is the result. The goal is to find all the original journalism and things that could impact or improve anyone in Edinburgh's day. It takes me most of Sunday afternoon and a couple of hours this morning. I hope it’s useful. If this work is worth 12p a day to you, or £5 a month, please subscribe. Thanks! Here’s today's Edinburgh Minute.
🌤️ This week’s weather: A dry start today with a chance of rain in the afternoon. The same on Tuesday: sunny start, wet afternoon. Wet for much of Wednesday. But drier and sunnier from Thursday into the weekend. Temperature wise, starting chilly at 3C today, warming up as the week goes on, peaking at 16C on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. - Here’s the full Met Office forecast.
🚨 There were reports a man was stabbed near Nicolson Street on Friday evening. A 23-year-old man is due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today. - Heather Carrick, Evening News, Keiran Fleming, STV News / BBC Scotland News. (All three reports contain the same details). Iona Young and Jacob Farr in Edinburgh Live add that the 'alleged stabbing took place next to the Central Mosque'.
🧘♀️ Hundreds of people have signed a petition calling on the council to change its decision to relocate the yoga studio at Portobello Swim Centre. But council leader Jane Meagher said: 'I’m very sympathetic to the needs of the yoga studio, but the centre needs to move with the times'. - Ross Chalmers, Deadline News.

🚔 A 49-year-old man suffered 'life-threatening injuries' after being hit by a car driven on Chesser Avenue on Saturday morning. - Jennifer Lang, Deadline News / Gabriel McKay, The Herald.
🐶 A man who killed a pet Alsatian dog in at Calder Park in 2024 has been jailed for more than two years and banned from owning animals for the rest of his life. - Alexander Lawrie in Edinburgh Live + in the Evening News.
🛟 The South Queensferry RNLI Lifeboat was called out to help people on a boat that had run out of fuel below the Forth Rail Bridge on Saturday. - The charity shared details here.
📍 Harry Williams, a 26-year-old Edinburgh resident whose work mapping planning applications across the city has been featured in the Minute for a long time, is interviewed about his efforts in Deadline News, by Tom H. Wilson. Here's an example of how Harry Williams' work can dig up topical plans:
- ⮑ London-based advertising firm Infinity Outdoor has applied to put up a 14-metre-wide advert on scaffolding around the corner of Princes Street and Hanover Street. - See the plans on City Scope and see how much harder the same plans are to navigate on the council planning portal.
- In a written supporting statement, the applicant cited two nearby controversial advertising hoardings (at the junction of Princes Street and South St Andrew Street and on the Jenners building), saying:
"Edinburgh Council has advised it would treat all applications in the same manner and by allowing illumination on other locations (e.g.- 25/04731/ADV- Jenners Building) but not the site in this application it will create an entirely unbalanced approach which will favour certain sites over others and put the application site at a distinct commercial disadvantage."
Illuminated advertising shroud is proposed around scaffolding at 72-77 Princes Street/3-5 Hanover Street, New Town, EH2 2DF. https://city-scope.co.uk/26/01406/ADV

For £5 a month, you help fund the (currently) tiny team of one person (👋) plus some occasional freelance support. In turn you’re supporting the promotion of local journalists’ vital work and keeping the newsletter 100% independent. I’ve decided to keep it as affordable as possible in the hope that you barely notice the cost. But together, your contributions can allow the Minute to continue and one day even grow, investing in more journalism and building a truly local platform – free from algorithms and commercial pressure.
