I'm excited to let you know that tomorrow morning I'll publish an update on how this newsletter has helped spark a new crackdown on tax-dodging businesses in the city. It could save local taxpayers thousands or even millions of pounds.

This impact simply would not have happened without paying subscribers of The Edinburgh Minute.

As well as the award-winning free daily round-up going to 33,000 locals (which has now passed 1,000 editions), paying subscribers help the Minute to dig deeper into improving public life. Subscribers get:

  • The Culture Minute weekly round-up on Wednesdays, featuring exclusive ticket deals, a creative jobs board, event announcements and more.
  • Local weekend guides on Fridays.
  • Original investigations and bonus editions into local issues.
  • You're helping to fund the tech behind the city's best Community Noticeboard, which also powers the free TownSpot local events calendar, map and app.
  • You also help to keep all of this 100% ADVERTISING-FREE and human-made (with no AI).

To run these additional investigations, I pay journalists fairly and also pay lawyers to ensure the reporting is legally reviewed, cleared and watertight before publishing. That costs me thousands each time, but seeing it directly protect the public purse proves it's worth every penny. It's the kind of journalism I quit my previous job to focus on.

Earlier this year, The Edinburgh Minute was named 'best local newsletter' at the International News Media Association's 94th annual World Congress Global Media Awards. While awards are nice, sadly the truth is that journalists and lawyers don't accept shiny glass trophies, framed certificates or even extinct tax-dodging bagel shop vouchers as payment. Instead, the Minute is a proudly people-powered publication.
