For all the news-avoiders, the clickbait-haters, the advert-enraged, AI-abstainers and doomscroll-quitters among us, the Minute exists for you.
I share your despair at the state of news. It's increasingly fractured across multiple platforms, toxic with bias thanks to billionaire owners and previously glorious local titles absorbed by national corporates suffocating or outright sacking their best reporters to cut costs. Edinburgh deserves better.
That's why I started The Edinburgh Minute in January 2023. I've worked full-time in media for more than 20 years and always believed that local news maintains the power to make communities stronger.
Based on feedback from more than 25,000 subscribers who signed up via word-of-mouth recommendations, I know it's working. Across nearly 800 editions the Minute has helped local causes raise thousands of pounds along the way. I've also helped nearly 100 people around the world start their own version of the Minute where they live. This is sending millions of visits to genuinely good local publishers who were losing traffic due to changes in Google rankings and social media referrals. There is good local journalism out there, it's just getting harder for all of us to find amid the internet noise. Which is where the Minute helps you save time. On top of that, more than 4,000 readers have sent in stories this year, which I verify and share. It's a wonderful audience and a real community effort.
I've also run investigations into tax-dodgers and various local scandals, all with justice and local democracy in mind. Your subscription helps keep all of this going. Without paying subscribers, the Minute would stop. It's been described as a 'revolution' for local news, and that's thanks to you supporting it.
Please read some of reasons shared by the happy subscribers below. Perhaps you can relate to some of them.

If you can afford a few quid to help keep the Minute ad-free, independent and landing in your inbox daily, please take up the 20% offer which ends today.
Thank you,
Michael
