🛜 Earlier this week it was announced the University of Edinburgh will become home to ‘the UK’s most powerful supercomputer’ (Minute edition 661).
⮑ In the posts’s comments, reader GA asked: “I wonder how they plan on powering and cooling this new supercomputer in Edinburgh - and whether funding will include planning around renewability goals and the computers impact on our environment here.” - So I asked the Uni and it responded:
“Hello, It is important to note that this is a resource that will support research and innovation across the UK, and is not limited to our University. There is no doubt that supercomputing facilities do place huge demands on energy consumption, however the processors that will be used are the most energy efficient ever developed. They will be powered by renewable electricity and the system will be Net Zero in operation. At Edinburgh, a feasibility study is also exploring how heat from the system, stored in old mine workings near the computing facility, could be harnessed to heat people’s homes. Read more about the study 👉 https://edin.ac/4fRm1uG”
🛝 For more family-friendly things to do, this week’s edition of Gayle’s Guide includes: Free outdoor cinema, Father's Day fun, a work/family balance workshop and more…

📌 "NHS Lothian has submitted a planning application for the demolition of the Millbank Pavilion on the Astley Ainslie Hospital site.
