👋 Welcome to the 139th weekly Culture Minute: a round-up of Edinburgh’s local creative news, events, jobs and opportunities. If I’ve missed anything please get in touch.
Today's edition is FREE for everyone. Next week, and throughout August, it's going to be strictly subscribers only, who will also get the Edinburgh Festival Minute daily. Yes, daily! Last year that proved indispensable for everyone from hardcore Fringe-goers to reluctant locals looking for inspiration for a day out. It's also going to be packed with deals you can't get anywhere else. The default, however, will be that you won't receive that unless you're a paying subscriber. It's £5 a month and you can unsubscribe right away if you just want it for August, I won't be (that) offended. (Don't worry, I honestly won't notice). I totally get why you'd sign up for August only. Here comes 'week zero', the week before the Fringe officially starts but in truth it's already begun in a 'fringe of the Fringe' way. First up, to set the scene, here's a handy list of what starts when:

🌊 If you look closely at those dates, you'll notice Fringe by the Sea in North Berwick has a full seven-day head-start on the rest. It begins this Friday and is only about 30-mins away by train from Waverley. The programme headliners include live music from Maribou State, Blur hero Alex James’ Britpop Classical show and comedy from Lou Sanders and Russell Howard. - Full line-up here.

📆 Let's dive in to 'week zero'. There are 824 preview shows between now and next Wednesday (5 August), two days before the Fringe officially starts on Friday 7 August with more than 4,000+ shows and 50,000+ performances.
- The trick is to toggle the date filters in the URL of the Fringe programme search. It's not rocket science but it's a bit fiddly. To save you time, these URLs will show you what's on each day:
- Every date between now and Wednesday 5th.
- Monday 3rd August (56 shows),
- Tuesday 4 Aug (69 shows),

🎟️ A new ticket lottery system for sold out Fringe shows has been launched. It's called Sold Out Board and helps people track the sold out or nearly sold out shows, as well join wait lists or enter ticket lotteries for additional ticket releases. - Check out Sold Out Board here.

📚 This year's Book Fringe programme has been announced. It's a bookshop run, alternative August literary festival, organised by the teams at Argonaut, Greenhouse and Lighthouse. - The line-up is here.
