🆕 News & happenings this week
🎨 Opening at the Royal Scottish Academy on The Mound this weekend, the ‘New Contemporaries’ exhibition showcases 104 of the best of Scottish art school graduates from 2022 and 2023.
⮑ Special events are planned outside of the show’s normal opening hours, including an after-hours RSA gallery tour from selected exhibitors on 11 April and an Academy Late event on 19 April with live music, ‘eccentric performances’ and a chance to meet some of the artists.
⮑ The exhibition is previewed in The Skinny by Harvey Dimond, who says:
“Oh, what a time to be an art school graduate. The combination of the COVID-19 pandemic, uncertain funding landscape and the ongoing cost of living crisis makes navigating arts education (and sustaining a practice) particularly challenging in the present moment. Despite this, the graduates selected for RSA’s New Contemporaries this year have not only produced work of an exceptional standard, but have also exercised great tact, resilience and perseverance.”
🇵🇸 Some of the biggest names in Scotland's cultural community including Young Fathers, James Kelman, Darren McGarvey and Kathryn Joseph – have united in calling for a immediate ceasefire of the ongoing atrocities in Gaza and a boycott of Israel. - Their names and full statement are here.
🧬 Edinburgh Science Festival begins this weekend. Running between 30 March and 14 April, it features more than 150 events, workshops, shows and talks for all ages. The programme is here (PDF) and the searchable events page is here.
