Doors Open Day, Womenâs Fiction Festival, film-makersâ workshops, Art Walk extended, witchcraft event + a new podcast recording studio
Welcome to the 12th edition of the Culture Minute, a weekly round-up of Edinburghâs local creative news, events, jobs and opportunities.
đȘ This is the ultimate weekend for those of us who like snooping in houses and buildings we canât normally access. Itâs Edinburghâs Doors Open Day weekend. Pre-booking is encouraged for many of the events, especially the rarely opened doors. - This yearâs Edinburgh events can be viewed in a list and map here.
đ§ This monthâs EHFM Culture Show is here. The Katies give their verdict on the Filmhouse fundraiser, overhyped/underhyped local eateries and a shout-out for this very newsletter. Thanks Katies.
âź If youâre reading this on Wednesday, thereâs also an interview with the organisers of tonightâs latest gig in the award-winning Amplifi concert series at The Queenâs Hall.
đ A new recording studio is due to open on Candlemaker Row next week. Fountain Sound aims to âsupport the creation of podcasts in Scotland and create a safe haven for audio work, aware of neurodivergence and background.â - You can have a look around the studio at the launch party next week.
đ The Bongo Club is hosting a club night celebrating the 50th anniversary of Edinburgh Nightline.
âïž The 2023 Edinburgh Womenâs Fiction Festival programme is live. The festival is the brainchild of four locals: Jane Anderson, Kristin Pedroja and Alison Belsham of the Edinburgh Writersâ Forum and Olivia Kekewich of Edinburgh Bookshop. They came up with the idea when they realised a large sector of authors and readers âwerenât being served by existing literary festivalsâ. Agent Jenny Brown, founder Director of the Edinburgh International Book Festival is a fan:
âI am fully supportive of the need for this festival to champion and promote womenâs fiction. Eleven years ago Bloody Scotland was established to raise the profile of crime fiction, and now Scotland is renowned for its crime writing. Watch this space, I predict a turning of the tide thanks to this bold and much-needed initiative.â - Jenny Brown.
âź The festival includes panel talks and workshops across 6 and 7 October. For details of the full programme and ticket sales, read more here.
