👋 Welcome to the 140th weekly **Culture Minute**: a round-up of Edinburgh’s local creative news, events, jobs and opportunities. If I’ve missed anything [please get in touch](https://www.townspot.co/submit/edinburgh-minute?ref=edinburghminute.com). Thanks to everyone who contributes!

#### **👀 Most-viewed links from the previous Edinburgh Culture Minute:**

1. All of the last edition's most-viewed links were August festival links, which are now out of date! [See the Festival Minute archive here](https://www.edinburghminute.com/tag/edinburgh-festival-minute/). There is some good discussion on the 2027 festival dates in the final post, [here](https://www.edinburghminute.com/edinburgh-festival-minute-the-final-weekend-29-31-august-2026/).

## 🗞️ News

🎭 The August festivals are over but you'll find **plenty more festivals in Edinburgh** between now and Hogmanay (*I nearly typed the 'C' word there*). Tickets for this year's **Scottish International Storytelling Festival** (21 - 31 October) will be available from Tuesday 15 September. The festival's [**family programme is live now**](https://sisf.online.red61.co.uk/events?s=family&ref=edinburghminute.com).

- Already announced: a key event in the programme titled '**National Theatre of Scotland at 20: Culture, Democracy, and the Stateless Nation**'. Here's the description: '*As the National Theatre of Scotland and the Scottish Storytelling Centre both mark their twentieth anniversaries, this special event brings together artists, academics, cultural leaders, public figures and audiences to explore the relationship between theatre, storytelling, literature and democratic life in Scotland. The event opens with a panel discussion then an in-conversation event with *Nicola Sturgeon and Joyce McMillan**.' - [Tickets are here](https://sisf.online.red61.co.uk/event/913:6761/913:30443/?ref=edinburghminute.com).

⛵️ Another festival: The first events on the programme for 12 - 15 November's annual ***Push the Boat Out*** international poetry festival at the Pleasance have been announced. Workshops include: '[*Maintaining an online presence as a writer: how, what and why?*](https://pushtheboatout.org/workshop/maintaining-an-online-presence-as-a-writer-how-what-and-why/?ref=edinburghminute.com)' with Naomi Head and '[*Overcoming imposter syndrome*](https://pushtheboatout.org/workshop/overcoming-imposter-syndrome-workshop/?ref=edinburghminute.com)' with Emma Collins. - [More details here](https://pushtheboatout.org/?ref=edinburghminute.com).

- The first wave of acts announced includes Jackie Kay, Henry Normal, Joelle Taylor, Luke Wright and Anthony Joseph, alongside a newly commissioned closing work.
- The full festival programme is due to be announced on 1 October. A special opening event is planned on *The Fingal* ship at the Shore on 31 October, [reports Rose Moncur in The Herald](https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/26515518.push-boat-poetry-festival-returns-edinburgh-november/?ref=edinburghminute.com).

🎭 While **Fringe** bosses have rejected calls to move 2027's festival to earlier dates in the calendar, there are still '***seven ways to improve Edinburgh's festivals for their 80th birthday***,' [writes Brian Ferguson in The Herald](https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/26513458.seven-big-ideas-improve-edinburghs-festivals-80th-season/?ref=edinburghminute.com).

[Edinburgh’s festivals are turning 80\. - The debate over why the final week of the Fringe felt quieter for some performers continues. "*It’s great to have a record sales day, but let’s not use that as evidence that the Fringe is thriving. One enormous Saturday can coexist with a very different picture across the rest of the festival especially when we're seeing fewer tickets per performance, and week 3 worryingly empty*," [says theatre producer Sam Bain on Instagram, with a lively debate ongoing in the comments section](https://www.instagram.com/p/DctVV5TDCCN/?ref=edinburghminute.com).
- "*Edinburgh could craft its own civic promise, co-written with residents, artists and festival workers, setting out what the city asks of its guests – not just what it sells them*," [writes Mike Small in Bella Caledonia](https://bellacaledonia.org.uk/2026/09/02/democratising-the-edinburgh-festival/?ref=edinburghminute.com).

📆 There's a vast range of **creative community events** already happening, as regular readers of the past 140 weekly editions of the Culture Minute know. Rounding up September's events, [Naomi Head of The Good Egg Project](https://thegoodeggproject.substack.com/p/the-good-egg-project-events-and-opportunities-8e9?r=1yiait&utm%5Fcampaign=post-expanded-share&utm%5Fmedium=web) has creative writing workshops, a guided creative writing walks in Holyrood & Victoria Parks, open mic gigs, film making masterclass, book clubs, a poetry club for new parents, the second 'Voices Beyond Borders' event, Poetry Slam champions and so much more.

## **🎭 What's on Edinburgh's stages this week?**

Here's Thom Dibdin of [All Edinburgh Theatre](https://www.alledinburghtheatre.com/?ref=edinburghminute.com):

**Well, that was the Fringe that was... Hope you all had a wonderful time of it. At Æ Towers we were busy reviewing all the shows made by Edinburgh-based companies. We didn't quite make all 180 or so of them, but we do have a righteous 152 shows covered. You can wade** [**through them all here**](https://www.alledinburghtheatre.com/tag/made-in-edinburgh+review+EdFRinge-2026/?ref=edinburghminute.com)**, if you are interested.**

So what of Edinburgh's stages this week? Not a theatrical sausage: unsurprisingly, everyone's gone for a little lie-down. All except our heroic Hugh, who was at Pitlochry for their "[**★★★★★ Devastating**](https://www.alledinburghtheatre.com/a-history-of-paper-pitlochry-festival-theatre-september-2026-review/?ref=edinburghminute.com)" ***A History of Paper***. If you want to see it, best leave now as there are a few briefs tonight, but the rest of the run is returns only.

There are a couple of non-theatre shows. The Festival Theatre has the ***Ocean Film Festival*** (Sat: [**tickets**](https://www.capitaltheatres.com/shows/ocean-film-festival-2/?ref=edinburghminute.com)) and ***Serena Terry: Therapy*** (Sun: [**tickets**](https://www.capitaltheatres.com/shows/serena-terry-therapy/?ref=edinburghminute.com)), while the Playhouse has ***The Prat Pack’s Back*** (Wed: [**tickets**](https://prf.hn/click/camref:1101l7N7x/pubref:Minute%20Pack/destination:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.atgtickets.com%2Fshows%2Fthe-prat-packs-back%2Fedinburgh-playhouse%2F?ref=edinburghminute.com)) and ***An Evening with Sir David Jason*** (Sat: [**tickets**](https://prf.hn/click/camref:1101l7N7x/pubref:Minutes%20David%20Jason/destination:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.atgtickets.com%2Fshows%2Fan-evening-with-sir-david-jason%2Fedinburgh-playhouse%2F?ref=edinburghminute.com)).

Next week it's a return to normal, with ***The Silence of the Lambs*** at the Festival Theatre (Tue 8-Sat 12: [**tickets**](https://www.capitaltheatres.com/shows/the-silence-of-the-lambs/?ref=edinburghminute.com)) and the Cole Porter musical ***High Society*** at the Playhouse (Tue 8-Sat 12: [**tickets**](https://prf.hn/click/camref:1101l7N7x/pubref:Min%20L%20High%20Society/destination:https%3A%2F%2Fwww.atgtickets.com%2Fshows%2Fhigh-society%2Fedinburgh-playhouse%2F?ref=edinburghminute.com)) both opening before next week's Culture Minute drops.

Local Heroes to look out for over the rest of the month include the LYAMC at the Church Hill Theatre with ***Bugsy Malone*** (Th 10 - Sat 12: [**tickets**](https://www.ticketsource.com/lyamc?ref=edinburghminute.com)) and Penpal Productions with six new script-in-hand works on the ***Seven Deadly Sins*** at Leith Depot (Mon 21: [**tickets**](https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/penpal-productions-present-dramathedepot-tickets-1999387796722?ref=edinburghminute.com)).

Then ***Showcase 2026*** the MacMillan Cancer Support benefit is ***Dream As One*** at the Church Hill (Tue 22 - Sat 26: [**tickets**](https://www.ticketsource.com/showcase?ref=edinburghminute.com)) while the canny students at Bedlam have secured the rights for a rare non-official tour production of ***Richard O'Brien's The Rocky Horror Show*** (Wed 23-Sat 26: [**tickets**](https://bedlamtheatre.co.uk/shows/richard-obriens-the-rocky-horror-show?ref=edinburghminute.com)), including a pair of midnight shows.

I'm off to try and create an orientation page for all those MiE reviews. As always, you can find news of future shows in Æ's listings pages, [**all linked here**](https://www.alledinburghtheatre.com/edinburgh-theatre-listings/?ref=edinburghminute.com).

[Awakenings + discussionThis screening is part of the Science and Film series created to mark 300 years of medical education in Edinburgh. The films invite us to think and explore science and health, and will have a 5-minute intro and 30-minute post-screening panel discussion with the below speakers:J. C. Santos, Critical Care Nurse at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, and year 4 student - Clinical HCP-Med (MBChB), University of EdinburghMaria Corretge, Consultant in General Medicine and Care of the Elderly, St John’s Hospital, NHS LothianStephen Brannan, Chair of Edinburgh’s branch of Parkinson’s UK and someone who’s been living with Parkinson’s DiseaseTilo Kunath, Professor of Regenerative Neurobiology, and Co-Director of the Centre for Regenerative Medicine, University of EdinburghBased on Oliver Sack’s 1973 memoir of the same name, Awakenings stars Robin Williams as the Sacks counterpart, here named Dr. Malcolm Sayer. Sayer is a shy neurologist who lands a job at the New York Bainbridge Hospital looking after patients who are in a catatonic state as a result of a rare disease. Speculating that their condition may be akin to an extreme form of Parkinsonism, he seeks permission from his superiors to treat them with L-dopa, a drug that was used to treat Parkinson’s disease at the time. His first patient is Leonard Lowe (Robert De Niro), who has been comatose for 30 years, and the treatment produces astounding results. The screening will be followed by an inclusive discussion with healthcare professionals and neuroscientists from the University of Edinburgh, inspired by the film’s themes of disease, care and recovery. Explore the science behind neurological disorders and how research findings can translate into meaningful change for patients. Where do science, healthcare and lived experience meet? Join us to reflect on how the film illustrates real‑world challenges in medical research and practice.
